The meeting with Hans Koschnick, Mostar administrator from 1994 to 1996, almost never happened. His efforts to reconcile Croatians and Bosnians weren’t to everybody’s liking. The German survived several assassination attempts, the first one having taken place a night before we met: a rocket fired by Croatian nationalists had devastated his hotel room. Luckily enough, Koschnick was drinking a beer at the bar. A healthy, lifesaving habit.
